Two Essex High School seniors won their class’ competition to develop a marketing campaign for fireflymag.com.

Tim Noordewier and James McCormick, along with fellow EHS student Becki Longo, recorded a radio ad and developed a detailed plan for an event at Talent Skate Park in Williston.

“We kind of went all out with it,” Noordewier said. “We were very meticulous about the details.”

EHS teacher Pam Hemingway challenged her marketing management class to come up with a way to market fireflymag.com to Vermont teens and young adults.

McCormick said they chose to make a radio ad because it was more cost-effective and people were more likely to listen to it.

“With radio, there aren’t a whole lot of stations that the majority of people listen to,” he said. “An ad on one of those stations, people are more likely to sit through.”

“We wanted to at the very least get people familiar with the name,” Noordewier added.

Firefly Marketing Director Sue Duke chose McCormick and Noordewier as the winners.

“They had an incredibly thoughtful and thorough campaign that included multiple mediums,” she said. “All of the students did a fantastic job and thought of things that weren’t on our radar, but their presentation was so substantive.”

Duke said she was originally just going to pick a winner, but she was so impressed with the projects that she decided to add second and third place and honorable mention categories.

“They were really diverse and they identified niches that we can market to in the future that we weren’t even aware of,” Duke said.

Second place went to Thomas Chagnon and Dylan Greer, and Peter Mergens took third. Kyle Christianson and Jake Farnham-Haskell received honorable mentions.

Duke said all of the students gave her good ideas.

“The whole point of this project was for the students to demonstrate how Firefly could be marketed to their peers,” Duke said. “Without a doubt they gave us some great ideas to build on for the future.”
